1. Purpose and application

Aerosol fire extinguishing generators MAG (GOA MAG, aerosol fire extinguishers MAG, hereinafter fire extinguishers) ТУ 4854-010-07509505-99 are intended to suppress classes “A2”, "B" and "C" fire according to GOST 27331-87.

Aerosol fire extinguishers MAG provide effective fire suppression of liquid, solid and gaseous substances, especially ones which are derived from hydrocarbons (oil, oil-products, natural gas, combustible lubricants and so on), and also electric equipment under voltage up to 35000 V (class "E" fire).

Fire extinguishers are not intended for fire suppression of metals and substances, which burn without access of air or are accompanied by smoldering.

The main facilities, where the aerosol fire extinguishing generators can be used:

  • industrial premises, warehouses with flammable liquids and combustible lubricants, storages of material assets, archives, including false ceilings and underfloor spaces of rooms;
  • covered parking places and garages;
  • premises of oil pumping, petrol and gas-distributing stations;
  • electrical equipment - radio and TV equipment, computers, monitors, servers, appliances, electrical cabinets, switchboards and other electrical equipment under voltage up to 35000 V;
  • computing centers, cable shafts and tunnels, power distribution and transformer substations, other facilities with electrical installations and electrical equipment;
  • sea and river transport - motor, instrument and luggage compartments of sea and river vessels, containers;
  • road transport - motor, instrument and luggage compartments of cars, trucks, buses, trolley buses;
  • air transport - motor, instrument and luggage compartments of planes and helicopters;
  • railway transport - motor, instrument and luggage compartments of locomotives, trams, subway trains.

2. Design and operation mechanism of fire extinguishers

An aerosol fire extinguisher MAG consists of a metal housing, which accommodates an aerosol generating element (elements) in the form of cylindrical grain (grains) made of the special fire extinguishing composition (FEC), igniting system (electric igniter of the type ДИ-134 or В-07; a fuse cord), heat absorbing elements (coolant) and a diaphragm for fire extinguishing aerosol outlet.

The fire extinguisher can be with bilateral efflux. In this case aerosol generating element with the igniting system is placed in the middle part of the housing, two coolant blocks and two diaphragms for aerosol efflux are arranged on either side of the element.

In case of fire and/or explosion threat of the protected object, the start unit of fire extinguisher automatically (through a fuse cord when the ambient temperature increases to 170 °C) or on the command from the control panel initiates the combustion process of aerosol generating agent with the release of fine aerosol which, passing through heat absorbing elements, cools, fills the space under protection in a few seconds and eliminates the seat of fire by the chemical inhibition of combustion reactions.

3. Means of activation

The fire extinguisher can be activated:

  • by energizing the fire extinguisher terminals through pressing the toggle (button) of manual start;
  • automatically from the fire detection sensor through connecting of the electrical circuit and energizing the fire extinguisher terminals;
  • by fuse cord located in the most possible places of fire occurrence and ignited by the open flame or when the temperature in the space under protection increases above 170 °C;
  • by means of activation device of type ПУ-01 ТУ 7287-025-07515405, triggering by mechanical impact when pulling manually the cotter pin (special ring).

Activation of the fire extinguisher by energizing is carried out by electric igniter ДИ-134, manufactured according to ДИ-134ТУ, or electric igniter В-07 (В07.00ТУ). Parameters of electric signal required for activation of the fire extinguisher are listed in the Table 1 below:

The type of activation of the fire extinguisher is to be reflected in its notation when ordering (see section 14 of this chapter):

  • index M (or М(Б)), which follows after the brand of the fire extinguisher, means that the design of the fire extinguisher provides the possibility of its activation either through an electric igniter В-07 (or ДИ-134), or through a fuse;
  • index Мр, which follows after the brand of the fire extinguisher, means that an electric igniter and a fuse cord are placed inside a special tube – the retaining element of the fire extinguisher;
  • index Ш, which follows after the brand of the fire extinguisher, means that the fire extinguisher is activated through a fuse only;
  • there is no letter index after the brand of the fire extinguisher (or there is index (Б) only) - the fire extinguisher can be activated by the means of the electric igniter (B-07) (or the electric igniter ДИ-134) only;
  • index У, which follows after the brand of the fire extinguisher, means the rectangular design of the housing;
  • index Г, which follows after the brand of the fire extinguisher, means that the fire extinguisher can be activated through the activation unit PU-01 (for fire extinguishers of the grenade type).

Fire extinguishers of the MAG series refer to the type II of aerosol fire extinguishing generators according to GOST Р 51046-97.

Fire extinguishing ability of aerosol for a class B fire is 0,10 kg/m3, for a class A2 fire - 0,13 kg/m3.

The temperature of fire extinguishing aerosol on the outlet cut (output diaphragm) does not exceed 500 °С.

The maximum temperature of the case of fire extinguisher during its work and at the end of its work does not exceed 300°С.

Temperature range of operation is from -50°С to +60°С, except the fire extinguishers with the weight of aerosol generating agent more than 1 kg. For them the upper limit of the operating temperature is 50 ° C.

Relative humidity is no more than 98% at 25°С.

The inertia of fire extinguishers at the temperature 20°С is (2,2+0,5) s, 50°С – (1,5+0,5) s, minus 50°С – (3,5+0,5) s.

In the case of the use of fire extinguishers in vehicles aerosol feed time (on customer request) may be less than 5 seconds.

The maximum drop height at which the extinguisher is not self-starts, keeps the integrity and performance - 1.7 m.

5. Safety measures

5.1. Before beginning of work with the fire extinguisher read this operating manual.

5.2. When working with fire extinguishers it is forbidden to:

  • disassembly the fire extinguisher;
  • impact and make some other actions which can result in deformation, mechanical damages of case and component parts;
  • conduct the welding operations and smoke near fire extinguisher and fuse.

5.3. When accidentally dropped the extinguisher must be checked to ensure that the electric circuit of igniter is intact. If the circuit is not damaged the extinguisher is allowed for use.

5.4. In case of fire and the inability to smother it with primary means of fire extinguishing, all persons in a room must leave the premises before triggering of fire extinguishers. Enter the premises is allowed only after ventilation. When the need for emergency operations before removal of the aerosol the works must be conducted using personal protective equipment - mask mark EO-16 (ГП-7).

5.5. Do not open the room under protection after the extinguisher operation within no less than 3 min. in order to exclude the re-ignition through the aerosol concentration decrease and due to its leakage and fresh air dissolution.

5.6. After the suppression of ignition place, remove the aerosol remainder by ventilation and the settled aerosol remove by dry or wet wiping.

5.7. All work on the installation and maintenance shall be conducted in accordance with requirements of НПБ 88-2001 “Facilities for fire-fighting and alarm. Norms and design rules” in the presence of the person responsible for the operation of fire extinguishers.

6. Preparation for operation

6.1. Conduct incoming inspection of the appearance by the visual inspection of fire extinguishers to ensure the absence of violations of the integrity of the shell. Portable fire extinguishers - hand grenades are inspected by a person responsible for fire-prevention, just before giving to staff.

6.2. Fire extinguishers with electric igniter shall be verified for the integrity of the internal electrical circuit with tester or an ohm-meter accuracy class not below 2.5 (carried out under the supervision of the person responsible for the installation of fire extinguishing system).

Current magnitude during testing shall not exceed 50 mA - briefly; 5mA - no time limit.

WARNING! CURRENT MAGNITUDE DURING THE TESTING MORE THAN 50 mA MAY RESULT IN TRIGGERING OF FIRE EXTINGUISHER.

7. Recommendations for the construction of fire-extinguishing systems for fixed fire extinguishers MAG and their installation on site

7.1. When installing the fire-extinguishing system one should follow the installation drawings developed for the specific facility and an electrical wiring of fire extinguishers, in accordance with the requirements of the НПБ-88-2001* "Automatic facilities for fire-fighting and alarm. Norms and design rules". Fig. 1 shows a schematic example of an aerosol fire-extinguishing system for motor transport.

WARNING! IF MORE THAN ONE EXTINGUISHER IS USED, CONNECT THEM IN PARALLEL WITH POWER SOURCE.

On customer request stipulated in the delivery agreement, the basic components of fire extinguishing system (automatic and manual starters) can be delivered with the fire extinguishers.

7.2. When selecting the place of installation of fire extinguisher it is necessary to consider that the most favorable temperature range of operation is from + 5°C to + 30°C.

7.3. Annunciators (detectors) of fire detection of automatic fire extinguishing system, as well as a fuse cord of starting of fire extinguisher should be arranged in the places of the most possible priority of fire occurrence or in the areas of the greatest increase of temperature.

7.4. In order to avoid dilution of the jet of aerosol by a flow of fresh air do not install fire extinguishers near openings, transoms, cracks and areas of possible depressurization. There should be no places of depressurization between a jet of fire extinguisher and hearth of burning, see fig.2 further.

7.5. A fire extinguisher at the object should be arranged in such a way that during its operation filling of the space with fire extinguishing aerosol was carried out from the bottom of the object. The optimum distance from the floor of the space under protection for fire extinguishers MAG-11…MAG-17, installed on the walls is 2...2,5 m.

7.6. While arrangement of a fire extinguisher and a fuse cord it is necessary to exclude ingress of mud, oil, aggressive medium and other contaminations on them, as well as to exclude the possibility of mechanical damages of a fire extinguisher, wiring and fuse.

7.7. In front of the output diaphragm of fire extinguishers MAG-1…MAG-5 at the distance of 0,3…1,0 m (for fire extinguishers MAG-11...MAG-17 at the distance no less than 2 m) should not be items that impede expiration of aerosol.

7.8. The fire extinguisher in the rooms should be arranged in such a way that the exhausting jet of aerosol could not hinder the personnel evacuation in case of fire, mount the manual switch in accessible place excluding the accidental switch possibility.

8. Mounting of fire extinguishing system

8.1. Before you start the installation of fire suppression system check the delivery for completeness, make sure there are no external defects of extinguishers and accessories.

8.2. Mounting fire extinguishers MAG-1 ... MAG-5 at the facility is performed using clamps and brackets (see Fig. 3 and 4). At fire extinguishers of unilateral aerosol expiration (MAG-1, MAG-2, MAG-3, MAG-5/1) clamp should be placed in the center of the body. For fixing of fire extinguishers of bilateral aerosol expiration (MAG-4, MAG-5/2) two clamps of similar design are used, which are placed on the body at a distance equal to one third of the total length of the body from his butts. Bolts fastening the straps shall be tightened with a wrench manually. After tightening the bolts, make sure to tightly pressed extinguisher.

8.3. For attachment on the object the fire extinguishers MAG-11 ... MAG-17 are equipped with attachment unit. (See Fig. 5). Scheme of attachment is shown in Fig. 5.

8.4. Features of mounting of fire extinguishers, which are equipped with a fuse (fire conductive cord).

8.4.1. Fire extinguishers come with a fuse, not docked to the starting system of a fire extinguisher.

At the same time, it is possible to supply a fuse of necessary length in one piece for one, two or more fire extinguishers. By customer request, stipulated in a contract for the supply, additional fuse can be supplied to interconnect all the fire extinguishers installed in the protected area (volume).

8.4.2. When connecting the fuse and fire extinguisher there are bushings mounted on the ends of the fuse (or on one end). They are screwed into the threaded holes in the center of the aperture of fire extinguishers. In order to prevent inadvertent unscrewing of the bushings during operation, before installing, lubricate the threaded surface of the bushings by the filler (paint, sealant, etc.). Installing of the bushings is shown in Fig. 6.

8.4.3. Installation of fuse on the walls of the protected volume should be performed using clamps (supplied) and self-tapping screws. Sample of mounting of a clamp and a fuse is shown in Fig. 7. The first clamp should be removed from a fire extinguisher not more than 150 mm for MAG-1 ... MAG-5 and not more than 450 mm for MAG-11 ... MAG-17. Follow-up clamps distribute evenly over the entire length of the fuse. When mounting the fuse must not be bent, the routing must be turned no less than 15 mm in radius. It's not permissible to overpress the fuse and its protective braiding. Make the fuse routing in places where its accidental mechanical damage is excluded.

When mounting the fuse on vehicles it is necessary to use the force carrier (insulated solid copper or aluminum wire with cross section 1.0 ... 2.0 mm2, connecting all fire extinguishers installed in a protected compartment). The wire is attached to the nodes of the vehicle. The fuse should be attached to the wire by insulating tape or plastic electrical clamps with step 30 ... 80 mm (without contraction).

8.5. For installation of electric starting system of fire extinguishers, use heat-resistant wire of RKGM 0.75 type.

Before mounting of electric starting means, be sure that they are not closed. First connect the wires to the extinguisher terminals, then connect to the fire extinguishing system components and finally – to a power supply.

8.6. After completion of works, control the appropriate installation of fire extinguisher, meeting all requirements of mounting documents and if required, make a note of installation in the certificate for the fire extinguisher or in the technical documentation of object under protection.

8.7 Grenade fire extinguishers are supplied with a mechanical triggering device (TD) and is not connected to the body of the extinguisher. Connecting the TD to the grenade body is performed by the personnel responsible for operation of fire extinguishers, just before taking over duty. To connect the TD unscrew the cap at the bottom of the extinguisher casing and screw the TD until it stops.

9. Operation procedure

9.1. Fire extinguisher in the fixed fire extinguishing system starts automatically with a delay of at least 30 seconds after the audible and visual alarm, or by pressing a manual toggle switch (button).

9.2. To start a hand grenade-fire extinguisher, when fire is detected visually, you need to bend the pin of starter located on the end of grenade, pull the pin on the ring, throw a grenade into the burning volume, and close the door.

WARNING! THE TIME BETWEEN PULLING THE RING AND THE BEGINNING OF THE EXPIRATION OF AEROSOL IS AT LEAST 6 S.

10. Maintenance

10.1. During the whole period of fire extinguisher operation it's not required to perform labor intensive scheduled or other maintenance.

10.2. It is advised to make a periodical visual inspection (at least twice a year) of fire extinguisher, to control the integrity of wiring, fuse, electric igniter terminals, and tightness of electric contacts as well as fastening bolts of fire extinguisher in the object.

10.3. For fire extinguishers mounted on vehicles, control the integrity of internal electric circuit of the fire extinguisher according to the item 6.2, no less than once every three months.

11. Transportation and storage

11.1. Fire extinguishers of the “MAG” series according to GOST 19433-88 belong to the danger class 4.1 “Flammable solid materials”. Transportation of fire extinguishers is carried out according to rules and requirements imposed on this category of cargoes.

11.2. Transportation of fire extinguishers to the customer is allowed to carry out by all types of transport without limitation of distance. It is recommended to use a plant-manufacturer packing for transportation.

11.3. The container with fire extinguishers must be well fixed on the vehicle and be protected against mud, humidity and atmospheric precipitations during transportation.

11.4. When loading and unloading it is not allowed dropping of the packed fire extinguishers.

11.5. It is recommended to carry out the storage of fire extinguishers in the package of the plant-manufacturer, on the shelves in warehouses with natural ventilation. If there are heating appliances, the packaging with fire extinguishers should be placed at the distance no less than 1 m from them.

12. Utilization of generators

12.1. The destruction of fire extinguishers after the end of operation should be performed in a specially fenced open area at least 50 meters from the nearest building by applying voltage to electric igniter; and for generators with a fuse, the destruction should be performed by ignition of the cable by a torch with a handle of 1 m long. Fire extinguishers MAG-1 (-2, -3, -4, -5) should be fixed taking into account the possible traction force not less than 20 kgf.

12.2. At the same time, you may destroy no more than three fire extinguishers MAG-1 ... 5, or one fire extinguisher MAG-11 ... 17. The direction of the aerosol output for unilateral efflux generators is vertically upwards.

12.3. Cases of fire extinguishers MAG-02… MAG-05 are made of aluminum nonferrous metal. There are no nonferrous metals in fire extinguishers MAG-10... MAG-17. The aluminum content in fire extinguishers: MAG -02 – 0,04 kg; MAG -1 –0,14 kg; MAG -2 – 0,16 kg; MAG -3 – 0,24 kg; MAG -4 – 1,1 kg; MAG -5 – 0,6 kg.

14. Structure and example of designation when ordering

14.1 Structure of designation

When ordering you should specify the brand of a fire extinguisher and extinguisher designation according to GOST Р 51046-97 (brands and designation of fire extinguishers are shown in Table 2, Section 4 of this chapter).

The starter of fire extinguisher should be specified after the name of fire extinguisher brand in the following way:

  • index M (or М(Б)), which follows after the brand of the fire extinguisher, means that the design of the fire extinguisher provides the possibility of its activation either through an electric igniter В-07 (or ДИ-134), or through a fuse;

15. Operation period and warranty obligations

15.1. The manufacturer guarantees the compliance of generators with the technical requirements in case the customer observes the rules of storage, transportation and operation.

15.2. Warranty period is 24 months from the date of shipment to the consumer.

15.3. Operation period is 5 years from the date of shipment to the consumer.
