1. Purpose and application

Aerosol fire extinguishing generators MAG (GOA MAG, aerosol fire extinguishers MAG, hereinafter fire extinguishers) ТУ 4854-010-07509505-99 are intended to suppress classes “A2”, "B" and "C" fire according to GOST 27331-87.

Aerosol fire extinguishers MAG provide effective fire suppression of liquid, solid and gaseous substances, especially ones which are derived from hydrocarbons (oil, oil-products, natural gas, combustible lubricants and so on), and also electric equipment under voltage up to 35000 V (class "E" fire). GOA are not intended for fire suppression of metals and substances, which burn without access of air or are accompanied by smoldering. Temperature range of GOA operation is from minus 50 °С to plus 60 °С.

Protected objects:

  • Engine compartments of vehicles: cars and sports cars, armored cars, buses, trucks, special equipment (construction, forestry, mining, drilling rigs, agricultural machinery);
  • Engine, luggage, instrument compartments, electrical cabinets of railway transport: locomotives, electric trains; as well as sea and river transport;
  • Electrical equipment - radio and television equipment, computers, monitors, servers, appliances, electrical cabinets, switchboards, other electrical equipment under voltage up to 35,000 V;
  • Computing centers, cable mines and tunnels, electrical distribution and transformer substations, other premises with electrical installations and electrical equipment;
  • Energy and production equipment and installations: engines, diesel generators, including in containers, CNC machines and automatic lines for the processing of metal, wood and other materials;
  • Warehouse containers;
  • Warehouses for flammable liquids, fuels and lubricants;
  • Technological compartments and premises, including false ceilings and underfloor spaces of industrial premises.

2. Design and principle of operation

GOA consists of a metal housing (MAG-3П - plastic housing), which accommodates an aerosol generating element (elements) in the form of cylindrical grain (grains) made of the special fire extinguishing composition (FEC), igniting system (an electric igniter В-07 ТУ В-07.00, ЭИ-2Т ТУ 7275-249-07513406-2006, ЭВФ-СП1/3-250 ТУ7287-002-49737433-2006, a fire impulse transmitter (FIT) ТУ 7275-312-05121441-99, a fuse (ОШ-1) ТУ7510-046-07509509-2009), heat absorbing elements from the composition of the brand ОС ТУ 84-7509009-79-94 and a diaphragm with outlets for fire extinguishing aerosol release. GOA can be with bilateral efflux of fire extinguishing aerosol.

When voltage is applied to the GOA terminals or when igniting ТОИ, ОШ-1 the fire extinguishing composition ignites and burns with releasing of highly dispersed aerosol, which passes through the heat-absorbing elements, cools, fills the protected volume and eliminates the source of ignition due to chemical inhibition of the combustion reaction.

3. Means of GOA initiation (start)

GOA can be activated:

  • automatically from the fire detection sensor;
  • by a fuse ОШ-1 or a fire impulse transmitter (FIT) located in the most possible places of fire occurrence and ignited by the open flame.

Electrical start of GOA is carried out by electric igniter ДИ-134 (ДИ-134ТУ) or В-07 (В07.00ТУ) or ЭИ-2Т (ТУ 7275-249-07513406-2006) or ЭВФ-СП1/3-250 (ТУ7287-002-49737433-2006). Parameters of electric signal required for start of the fire extinguisher are listed in the Table 1:

The type of start of the fire extinguisher is to be reflected in its notation:

  • there is no letter index in the designation of the GOA brand after the base name - the design provides for starting only from an electric igniter;
  • in the designation of the GOA brand, after the base name, the M index is added - the design provides for starting from both the electric igniter and the igniter cord ОШ-1 or the fire impulse translator (FIT);
  • in the designation of the GOA brand, after the base name, the index P is added - the design has a plastic case;
  • in the designation of GOA after the base name the index U is added - the design of the case has a rectangular shape;
  • after the brand of fire extinguisher index H is added  - the design is unified, can be used with an igniter unit with FIT, or with an igniter unit with ЭВФ-СП1/3 (МБ-2Н), or with a control unit as part of an stand-alone installation AUPA.

The maximum temperature of the case of GOA during its operation and at the end of its operation does not exceed 300°С.

For GOA MAG-3П, the temperature of the case during operation does not exceed 50 °C and at the end of its operation does not exceed 200 °C.

Fire extinguishing aerosol is a low-toxic product that, up to a concentration of 0,13 kg/m3 by mass of aerosol generating agent is classified as low hazard with moderately pronounced general toxic and irritant effects.

Ozone-depleting potential for fire extinguishing aerosol, obtained during the operation of GOA is not more than 0,01.

5. Safety measures

5.1. Before start using GOA, it is necessary to familiarize with this manual.

5.2. When working with GOA, the following is prohibited:

  • disassemble the GOA;
  • to strike or carry out any other actions leading to deformation, mechanical damages to the casing and component parts;
  • carry out welding work and smoke near GOA and FIT.

5.3. In case of accidental fall of GOA, check the integrity of the electric circuit of the igniter or igniter unit. In the absence of violations of the circuit, GOA is allowed to use.

5.4. After GOA has triggered, do not open the protected premise for at least 3 minutes in order to avoid re-ignition due to decrease in the concentration of the aerosol due to its leakage and air flow.

5.5. After actuation of GOA in the protected room (compartment), it must be ventilated. In case of unauthorized (false) triggering of GOA, airing should be carried out immediately.

It is desirable to remove the accumulation of aerosol particles on the surface of equipment, instruments, mounting structures, etc. during the first days after operation.

5.6. All installation and maintenance work should be carried out in accordance with the requirements of SP 5.13130.2009 “Fire protection systems. Fire alarm installations and automatic fire extinguishing. Norms and rules of design”.

6. Preparation for work

6.1. To conduct an input control of the GOA appearance by visual inspection for the absence of violations of the integrity of the case.

6.2. In GOA with an electric igniter, check the integrity of the internal electrical circuit with a tester or an ohmmeter of accuracy class not lower than 2,5 (carried out under the supervision of the person responsible for the installation of the fire extinguishing system).

The test current should not exceed 50mA for a short time (for MAG-3П - 40mA); 5mA - no time limit.

ATTENTION! EXCEEDING THE VALUE OF THE TEST CURRENT OF 50 MA CAN LEAD TO GOA TRIGGERING.

6.3 In order to avoid dilution of the aerosol jet with the inflow of fresh air, it is necessary to avoid installation of GOA near apertures, transoms, cracks and places of possible depressurization of volume.

6.4 When placing FIT, ОШ-1 and GOA, avoid contact with dirt, oils, corrosive media and other contaminants, as well as the possibility of mechanical damage.

6.5 GOA in the premises should be placed in such a way that the outgoing aerosol jet does not impede the evacuation of people in case of fire, install the manual switch to an easily accessible place, which excludes the possibility of accidental activation.

7. Recommendations for installation of fire extinguishing systems

7.1. When installing a fire extinguishing system, follow the installation drawing developed for a specific object and the electrical connection diagram of fire extinguishers, in accordance with the requirements of SP-5, set of rules 13130.2009 “Fire protection systems. Automatic fire alarm and fire extinguishing installations. Norms and rules of design. (Section 10)

An exemplary diagram of the aerosol fire extinguishing system for vehicles is shown in fig. 1.

ATTENTION! IN THE EVENT OF APPLICATION OF MORE THAN ONE FIRE EXTINGUISHER, THEIR CONNECTION TO THE POWER SUPPLY SOURCE IS IMPLEMENTED IN PARALLEL.

7.2. When choosing a place for installation of a fire extinguisher, it is necessary to take into account that the most favorable temperature range of its operation is from plus 5 °С to plus З0 °С.

7.3. Locate detectors (sensors) of fire of an automatic fire extinguishing system, as well as a start fuse of a fire extinguisher in the places of the most probable primary occurrence of a fire or in areas of the highest temperature rise.

7.4. In order to avoid dilution of the aerosol jet with the inflow of fresh air, it is necessary to avoid installation of fire extinguishers near apertures, transoms, cracks and places of possible depressurization of volume. There must also be no space depressurization between the fire extinguishing jet and the burning center - see fig. 2

7.5. It is recommended to place the fire extinguisher on the object in such a way that during its work the filling of the volume with fire extinguishing aerosol is carried out from the bottom of the object. The optimal distance from the floor of the protected object for MAG-11 ... MAG-17 fire extinguishers installed on the walls is 2..2.5 m.

7.6. When placing the fire extinguisher and the fuse, avoid contact with dirt, oils, corrosive media and other contaminants, as well as the possibility of mechanical damage.

7.7. Before the output aperture of MAG-1 ... MAG-5 fire extinguishers at a distance of (0.3 ... 1.0) m (for MAG-11 ... MAG-17 fire extinguishers at a distance of at least 2 m) there should be no objects that impede aerosol outflow.

7.8. Place the fire extinguisher in the premises in such a way that the outgoing aerosol jet does not impede evacuation of people in case of fire; install the manual-start toggle switch in an easily accessible place, which excludes the possibility of accidental activation.

8. Installation of fire extinguishing system

8.1. Before starting work on the installation of a fire extinguishing system, check the completeness of the GOA delivery; make sure that there are no external defects of the GOA and its components.

8.2. The MAG-2, MAG-3, MAG-5/1 fire extinguishers are mounted on the object with clamps and brackets (see fig. 3 and 4). In fire extinguishers of one-sided aerosol outflow (MAG-2 MAG-2M, MAG-3, MAG-3П, MAG-5/1, MAG-5/1M), place the clamp in the center of the case. MAG-4У can be fastened at the facility directly to the wall surface using anchor bolts (see fig. 5) or locally on special brackets (see fig. 6). MAG-13У can be fastened at the facility directly to the wall surface using anchor bolts (see fig. 7) or locally on special brackets (see fig. 8). For fastening at the facility, GOA MAG-17 is equipped with a fastening assembly.

9. Transportation and storage

9.1. During the entire period of GOA operation, labor-intensive routine maintenance and other works are not required.

9.2. It is recommended to conduct periodically (at least twice a year) an external inspection of the fire extinguisher, monitor the integrity of the ОШ-1 or FIT, tightening of electrical contacts and mounting bolts of a fire extinguisher at the facility.

9.3. For fire extinguishers installed on vehicles, conduct an integrity check of the internal electric circuit of the fire extinguisher in accordance with clause 6.2 at least 1 time per quarter.

10. Maintenance

10.1. GOA belongs to class 9 “Dangerous goods in equipment or dangerous goods in devices” according to GOST 19433. “Dangerous goods. Classification and marking”, UN number 3363. Transportation of fire extinguishers is to be carried out in accordance with the rules and requirements for this category of goods.

10.2. Transportation of GOA to the consumer is allowed to carry out by all kinds of transport without distance limits. Packaging of the manufacturer is recommended for transportation of products.

10.3. In the process of transporting the container with GOA should be securely fastened to the vehicle and protected from dirt, moisture, precipitation.

10.4. When loading and unloading,  packages with GOA are not allowed to drop.

10.5. GOA storage is recommended to be carried out in the manufacturer’s packaging on shelves in warehouse premises with natural ventilation. In the case of the presence of heating devices, packages with fire extinguishers should be placed at a distance not closer than 1 m from the heating devices.

11. Disposal of generators

11.1 Destruction of GOA, after the end of life is to be carried out on a specially fenced open area at a distance of at least 50 meters to the nearest building by applying voltage to the electric igniter, and for generators with a cord – by igniting of ОШ-1 or FIT by a torch with a handle of 1 m long. GOA must be securely mounted on the stocks, taking into account the possible thrust force of at least 20 kgf.

11.2 Persons conducting the disposal must be located away from the working product at a distance of at least 10 m.

11.3 Metal products that are part of GOA, remaining after the device has been triggered, are processed in standard mode.

12. Manufacturer's warranty

12.1 The manufacturer guarantees that the quality of the product complies with the requirements of the technical conditions if the consumer observes the rules for transport and storage operation.

12.2 The product lifetime is 5 years from the date of shipment to the consumer, the warranty period for storage and operation is 24 months.
